ALTERED ART WORKS
February 13 and 20 (Wednesdays)
10:00am to 4:00pm
Hollanders
Ann Arbor, MI
Hollanders

Altered Art Works with Donna Engstrom. Recycle, reuse, redefine ordinary found objects and turn them into meaningful works of art. On the basis of their choice, students will use collage and assemblage to fashion their work into three dimensional pieces. Explore design options, including techniques for painting interesting backgrounds, fasteners, color combinations, and use of imagery. Many pieces develop intuitively as the student works on them; however, students may choose a theme or concept for their piece to help make image and object choices. Designed for beginners or continuing students.

Please register through Hollanders.

TEXTURE, TEXTURE EVERYWHERE!
February 16 (Saturday)
10:00am - 5:00pm
Hand Made Paper Guild
Kalamazoo, MI

Experience the potential of acrylic gels to create interesting surface textures and paints to create visual textures on paper (your own and/or the paper provided).  You will use all manner of simple objects like plastic forks, plastic canvas, gutter screening, etc. to produce a myriad of designs.  Once dry, Donna will demonstrate a variety of painting techniques using acrylics and metallics - so you’ll get a bit of color theory to boot!  Each project will be done on a separate sheet so you will end up with a stack of technique sheets that could be used as collage, made into a booklet or even a wall hanging.

COLLAGE WORKSHOP
March 29 (Saturday)
Lourdes College
Sylvania, OH

We will focus on the freedom of putting a collage together that translates into a work of art, while concentrating on composition using images, textures, words, etc.  Pulling it all together is the key for a successful mixed media collage.  It is very helpful to think about a theme in advance and have materials that center around that theme to work with.  I will cover painting interesting backgrounds as well as some image transfer techniques.  Samples of my work will be available for reference.  Students should have a close to finished product when they leave.

MIXED MEDIA EXPLORATIONS
April 19-20 (Saturday and Sunday)
10:00am to 4:00pm
Hollanders

During this two day workshop, you will learn a variety of techniques in mixed media including background treatments, texturing ideas, collage, image transfers, metal etching, creating your own unique language using symbols, carving your own stamps, various painting technique, and even a little color theory. At the completion you will have several canvas sheets, suitable for wall hangings and showcasing the techniques you have learned. Designed for beginning or continuing students.  Come and play with me!

The human form has been celebrated and idolized in the form of dolls for centuries. Whether making a primitive or more elaborate shape; whether using sticks, fabric, or found objects; this class is about looking at dolls in a new way. Wire, nuts, bolts, fiber, paper, embroidery thread, beads, wood, clay, metal - almost any material imaginable can come into play in this class. Donna will discuss the creative process, color choices, design and assembly ideas, and even give you permission to play with your finished doll!

MIXED MEDIA WORKSHOP
September 13 and 14 (Sat-Sun)
The Writings on the Wall
This workshop is for those who draw their inspiration from words, quotes, and poetry. Using unstretched canvas, each student creates a 2' x 4' wall hanging that illustrates a favorite poem, book passage, or personal journal entry. The instructor leads the student through the process of painting, collage, transferring, drawing, attaching, ripping, cutting, and layering the canvas surface. Instruction focuses on design, color choices, and options for displaying the work.
